Sydney Leigh is my Woman In Horror today! A couple of years can make an enormous difference in the lives of authors. Especially great authors. I first met Sydney through a great review she gave to me and other authors for Enter At Your Own Risk:Dark Muses, Spoken Silences, published by Firbolg Publishing. I was very happy for her great review. Next thing I knew, she was an author in Enter At Your Own Risk: The End Is The Beginning, also published by Firbolg Publishing.

This year, she and I will meet in Atlanta at the Horror Writers Association Convention. Her fantastic short story Baby's Breath from the great anthology Bugs: Tales that Slither, Creep, and Crawl has been Nominated For Superior Achievement In Short Fiction for the Final Ballot of The Bram Stoker Awards.   What a great honor! Her story is powerful and certainly deserves to go all the way. Way to go Sydney! Go to http://thespiderbox.shawnaleighbernard.com/blog and read all about it.

How do I top what I just wrote? I don't. Let's go straight to Sydney's super books after her Amazon bio.

Sydney's Amazon Bio:

Sydney Leigh is the evil literary double of a mostly sane writer, editor, and native of the North Shore. Her poetry, short fiction, and reviews have appeared in various magazines and anthologies.

Recent publications include her Bram Stoker Award® nominated story "Baby's Breath," as well as her experimental poem "The Undertaker's Melancholy," which appears in DARKNESS AD INFINITUM. Her dark fairy tale "Rabenschwarz" shares pages with gothic horror legends in Firbolg Publishing's ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK: THE END IS THE BEGINNING. Forthcoming work includes short fiction and poetry in anthologies from Written Backwards and Shroud.

She currently works at Villipede Publications and is the Chief Editor of Eldritch Press' Novel Division. Find out more at thespiderbox.shawnaleighbernard.com.

Bugs: Tales that Slither, Creep, and Crawl

Book Description

October 30, 2014
34 of today’s top voices of terror take on the undulating hoards of a life form that knows no mercy, only the primitive urges to kill, destroy, and feed. They skitter through remote swamps and pine barrens; slither up from the earth and creep through human civilization, determined to conquer our world and others; crawl under and across our flesh, hungry, so very hungry…

Bugs! Tales That Slither, Creep, and Crawl features stories from Eric S. Brown, David Bernstein, Lawrence Santoro, Tracy L. Carbone, and others.

If you like stories that make your skin crawl and have you setting up sticky traps thru out your house pick this gem up. 98 percent of these stories were truly terrifying. Well worth my time.

Good collection of short stories. Any parent with a little girl will especially love "Nika's Nest."

Once again, my friends, Baby's Breath, has been Nominated For Superior Achievement In Short Fiction for the Final Ballot of The Bram Stoker Awards. Kind of says it all, doesn't it?

Enter at Your Own Risk: The End is the Beginning

Book Description

May 6, 2014
Human beings—the undisputed top of the food chain, the long-standing masters of planet earth. Or are we? What may be crawling out of the sludge to take our place? What monsters have we created in our labs, factories, and our very own genetic code? In the fourth installment of Firbolg Publishing’s Enter at Your Own Risk series, which pairs Gothic masters such as Edgar Allan Poe, Mary Shelley, and H.P. Lovecraft with modern authors of the dark and macabre, the theme is environmental horror. As mankind’s tsunami wave of progress, industrialization, and technology reaches spectacular new heights, sinister things are churning beneath the surface. An unfamiliar stench on the wind. Waters a bit too murky. Soil a bit too red with blood. Progress at a price. A terrible, terrible price. Will we survive? What strange new worlds will emerge from the chaos? With an introduction from Holly Newstein, Enter at Your Own Risk: The End is the Beginning explores both the horror of the end and the hope of new beginnings for our planet and ourselves.

THE END IS THE BEGINNING may seem like a collection of horror and science fiction, but the frightening truth is, it might just be our generation's The Prophecies, predictions of what's to come if things don't change. Incurable diseases. Pollution. Out-of-control technologies. Climate change. Extinctions in the name of progress. The stories in this book range from chilling to terrifying, but all of them are thought-provoking in some way, opening our eyes to the dangers of disregarding our environment, of trying to play god. This is Frankenstein on a global scale, and we are the peasants suffering from the arrogance of those who would put greed and progress above common sense. I dare you to read this book before bed and not experience nightmares. Old masters of horror and new ones wait between these pages to open your eyes and infect your hearts with dread. Enjoy their tales, because afterwards you may never look at the world the same again. - JG Faherty, Bram Stoker Award®- and ITW Thriller Award-nominated author of more than 50 short stories and 10 novels/novellas, including CASTLE BY THE SEA, FATAL CONSEQUENCES, and CARNIVAL OF FEAR.

"A brilliant blend of the old and new, providing a diverse perspective on a modern problem..." Rob Smales, author of Dead of Winter

This is a book that should be read by a fireplace with either a cat in your lap or a dog at your side. It will keep your interest and make you happy if in bed that you have a honey sleeping next to you when you read it. The stories vary in style from classic creepy to comeuppance creepy all smoothly delivered. Great authors! A truly worthy collection.

It's pretty obvious that a multi-talented author like Sydney should be included in everyone's list for Woman In Horror. Today is also her birthday. Drop by and wish her the best one ever!
